Evander Holyfield. Evander is “The Real Deal.” A cruiserweight and heavyweight champion, Olympic medalist, and the only boxer ever to become world champion four times, Holyfield is truly one of the greatest fighters of all time.
But as Holyfield explains, his success didn’t come solely from his boxing skills—it was born from the lessons he learned as a boy and still carries with him into the ring today. In BECOMING HOLYFIELD: A Fighter’s Journey (Atria Books; February 19, 2008; $25.00; Hardcover; 1-4165-3486-5) the legendary boxer presents a candid and riveting account of his life in and outside the ring. You can get the book here.
BECOMING HOLYFIELD is an enlightening and inspiring memoir from one of boxing’s truly legendary fighters. Now 44, Holyfield is on a quest for a fifth world heavyweight championship and despite surgery to repair his shoulders, he is as determined and confident today as he was when he first stepped into the ring. “I’ve spent my entire career proving the critics wrong,” Holyfield writes. “They said I was too small to be a heavyweight, and I won the world championship four times. They said I couldn’t go the distance, and I won my first world title in fifteen rounds of one of the most grueling matches ever fought then did the same against the likes of George Forman, Larry Holmes, and Riddick Bowe. I know what I’m doing. I’ve had a pretty good life minding it my own way.” You can visit him on the web at evanderholyfield.com |

Brian Selznick. He says "I started writing the book as a traditional novel, thinking it would have perhaps one drawing per chapter. But I love picture books and the idea of visual narratives, and I've wondered what would happen if you illustrated a novel like a picture book. I've experimented with this idea a little bit in some novels by other authors I've illustrated, like The Meanest Doll in the World by Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin, as well as Our House by Pam Conrad. I created visual openings for these books, so the reader's first connection to the story is through the pictures." The Invention of Hugo Cabret was the first book club selection of “Al Roker’s Book Club for Kids.” For more information about Al’s Book Club for Kids, visit the Today Show website at: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/18179145/ His book can be found at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, or your favorite bookstore. BabyFace performed a song from his new album. "Playlist" was a labor of love for Babyface because, as is the case with so many millions of other people, these songs are a big part of the reason that he fell in love with music in the first place. "When I was in the seventh or eighth grade, I would go to church on Sunday, and I'd listen to the music," Edmonds recalls about his childhood in Indianapolis. "That was the fun part for me. But when the preacher started preaching, I would leave and go to the car and listen to the radio. Normally, I would listen to the R&B station, but they'd be playing church music, too. So I'd switch to the AM pop station, and that's where I was introduced to James Taylor, Bread, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton. I was learning how to play guitar, it was acoustic music, and it talked to me. I loved it." |

By the time Al graduated from college, he not only had a modest cult following from the good Doctor's radio show, but he also had a couple of nationally-released singles ("My Bologna" and "Another One Rides The Bus"). In 1982 he signed a deal with Scotti Bros. Records, who went on to release all of his albums through Bad Hair Day (1996). Volcano Records eventually bought Scotti Bros. Brian McKnight - “It’s always been my goal to try and bring back real R&B music,” Brian says. “When I was growing-up it was all about the seventies soul men. From the first time I ever stepped into a studio, my daydream was to pick-up where Marvin Gaye left off.” While Brian’s aspirations might have seemed like a lofty ambition, the longevity of his career is a testament to the purity of his vision.
Currently working on a variety of projects including a talk show and soundtracks for two upcoming Tyler Perry projects, the veteran soul singer could not be happier with the outcome of his new CD Ten. “When I finish a record, I listen to it from beginning to end,” McKnight says. “Truthfully, I think this is the best record I’ve done in years.” For fans of real music, Ten is the perfect addition to the soul cannon.
